  • Pacquiao’s Victims

I thought I’d take a moment to celebrate the achievements of one of my favorite athletes of all time, Manny Pacquiao. He was a small Phillipino fighter who entered the ring  weighting 104 lbs., won a belt at Flyweight (112 lbs.) and moved up the ranks until most recently, when he dismantled a bigger, stronger, ferocious opponent at Welterweight (145 lbs.).

Along the way he has collected belts in seven different weight classes. That is an all-time boxing record, for those keeping score. He is one of the fastest, most accurate punchers of all time, and every time he steps into the ring, you are guaranteed a high-intensity fight.

More than all of this, Manny is an extremely humble guy. He leaves the fate of his fights to his God, and says his job is to train hard and fight hard, and that’s it. This humility translates out of the ring as well. He carries the weight of his country on his shoulders, and does everything he can to help his people, many of whom are impoverished and sick.

This spirit is in stark contrast to his next most likely opponent, Floyd Mayweather, Jr., who is nothing if not delusional about his status in the boxing world. As one of the most technically sound boxer in history, Mayweather tends to confuse dominance with victory. Mayweather wins fights, Pacquiao dominates them.

To celebrate his seventh world title, I figured I would share a collection of the seven most notable opponents who have tried and failed to dethrone boxing’s true king.

  • The Sonic Ads

The Barkley ad agency’s campaign for Sonic Drive-In is of my favorites of all time. I see the ads all the time, even though the places I’ve lived haven’t even had them. No matter, there’s something addictive about these commercials. Borne mostly of loose scripts and choice improv, you can’t help but remember these, love ’em or hate ’em.

Each commercial opens on a shot of a Sonic, then cuts inside a car where we listen to the ramblings of two passengers at the drive-in. As far as I know, there have thus far been three pairs of characters (I do remember a one-off with the wife and her friend, however).

The first (original?) pair are played by T.J. Jagodowski (as the wily dufus) and Peter Grosz (as the wisdom-imparting driver).

The second casting pair are a married couple played by Molly Erdman and Brian Huskey. Finally, there are a few spots involving a pair of female best friends, though I’ve always considered them to be a female incarnation of the two guys who started it off.

Anyway, I’ve included a fairly extensive set of the campaign, though it is not entirely comprehensive. If you make it through them all and really want to find more, I salute you and good luck!

P.S. If for some reason you load the page, and one of the flash movies isn’t embedding properly, you may need to reload the page. It seems I’m pushing Flash to its limits here!

Am I the only one who finds this campaign funny? My friend does not, and I have a feeling he might not be alone. Some help, please?

  • Save Some for the Moonwhales!

    Water on the Moon

Several weeks ago, NASA crashed a satellite into the moon. In the process, they found water, several white buckets full. I think we can all sleep easier now knowing that once we completely deplete our own planet of water (any year now according to Al Gore), us resource gluttons can simply hop into Richard Branson’s White Knight Two and get some cherry sno-cones on the moon.

  • Woman Falls Onto Train Tracks

Relax, I wouldn’t post it if someone was decapitated. Plus, only here can you view all three angles at the same time! I found it interesting that Angle 1 revealed a fairly bustling station, while Angle 3 made it appear that nobody was really around really.

Plus, let’s hear it from the local news how this woman came to pass out in the face of certain doom:

  • Pacquiao vs. Cotto – Nov. 14

Now that you know where I’ll be Saturday night, November 14, it’s time you found out what it’s going to take to be watching the fight as well. If you’re a boxing fan, I don’t need to convince you in the least; if you’re not a fan yet, there is no better way into the sport than with this fight. See you there!

    Wegman the Dadaist?

I have to admit, I’m a little too young to have much insight into the cultural relevance of Will Wegman in his younger days, but happened upon some strange films he made in the 70’s and 80’s which may have renewed my respect for the Anne Geddes of the dog world. Check them out…

  • Strange Stock 001

In my line of work I spend a lot of time searching on stock sites for imagery. I use this mostly as a tool to express concepts to clients, hoping to find useful, relevant imagery for my presentations. But as some of you may know, for every one good image on a stock site, you must sift through dozens of inappropriate, and sometimes downright baffling other images. In this section I will share some of my findings.

    “Holding Food Cheese”

Okay, first up I needed to find some imagery of people holding food, and I needed there to be cheese on the dishes they were holding. Sounds simple enough. I didn’t have tons of faith I would find many images like this (and I was right) but I had a sneaking suspicion I’d come across a couple questionable finds. I was right. Here you go…

    Strange Stock 001

Not sure I need many words for the above image, but suffice to say, it wasn’t exactly what I had in mind.

    Strange Stock 001

Typical, the woman wants the man’s attention, but the man only has eyes for his M&M cheese pizza.

    Strange Stock 001

This is a literal example of someone holding cheese. I can only assume this guy is checking the ripeness of his cheese wheel, but man, it’s a strange image nonetheless. I was tempted to use it just for effect.

  • “Happy Teachers Day” Spam

Got this spam mail the other day. The subject was “Happy Teachers Day”. Apparently on Teachers Day, I can get Viagra and Cialis for cheap, which is great to know. And I guess it’s customary to also recite strange, abstract poetry on Teacher’s Day as well, though I’m only theorizing.

For some reason this email didn’t make it into my Junk folder. Personally, I think it was because of how awesome it was. I almost went online to buy some Cialis just to support the makers of this spam.

  • John Adams VFX Reel

This is probably one of the best breakdowns of VFX in a film or TV show I’ve seen yet. Now I need to see a breakdown of the breakdown, which is quite a production unto itself.

  • Ballsy

The train was packed, but this woman (who was not transient in the least) seemed to have little regard for the other passengers. You’ll notice a man standing in the corner of frame.

Some people are just too nice to say anything, myself included. Still, it was worth snapping the shot, if for no other reason than to share this little piece of humanity with you.
